San Marcos, Texas
San Marcos, TX SEO and web design, with SEO plans from $65 a month
In San Marcos, people search for a web designer far more often than for an SEO company, and Google still mixes the city up with San Marcos, California. We build sites and run SEO that leave no doubt which San Marcos you serve.

What Google shows for "san marcos seo"
We pulled the live result for "san marcos seo" on October 17, 2026. Google returned nine organic results: seven agency pages, one directory list and one Facebook post. There was no map pack, and an AI Overview sat above the links. The detail that stands out is geography. At least two of those results were written for San Marcos, California, the city in San Diego County, and one of the list pages was ranking agencies for the California city. Google is serving both cities to the same query.
For a business on the Texas side, that is an opening. A page that says "San Marcos, TX", names Hays County and talks about things only the Texas city has gives Google a clear reason to show it to a searcher between Austin and San Antonio.
The People Also Ask box was mostly about money. Two separate questions asked what SEO costs, one asked whether it is worth paying for, one asked what an SEO company actually does, and the last two were "Is SEO dead now with AI?" and a question about the 80/20 rule. Buyers here are early in the process and watching the budget, so a page that states cost and scope plainly, above the contact form, has an edge over one that hides both.
Web design is the bigger search here
The October 2026 numbers lean one way. "san marcos web design", "web design san marcos" and "web design san marcos tx" each show about 140 searches a month, while the SEO phrasings sit at 10 to 20 each. Those three web design phrasings probably share one pool of searchers rather than adding up to 420 different people, and the shorter two may include some California traffic, but even read cautiously, people here look for someone to build a site far more often than for an SEO company. The full cluster we track comes to about 540 a month.
That matches how a lot of small businesses think: get a site first, worry about rankings later. The cheaper path is to treat them as one job. A new site for a restaurant, an apartment community or a river outfitter should be planned around the searches it needs to win, with the menu, floor plans or rental options, the hours and the location written in from the start. Then the launch is also the first month of SEO instead of a site that has to be reworked.
A college town on I-35
Census estimates put San Marcos at 74,316 people in 2024, up 9.6% from 67,782 in 2020, so the city added about 6,500 residents in four years. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey for 2019-2023 counts 38,503 employed residents, and the largest group, 17.2%, works in accommodation and food services, ahead of educational services at 14.8% and retail trade at 13.8%. Median household income comes to $51,030.
Those numbers read like the place. San Marcos is home to Texas State University, a stop for I-35 traffic, a retail town with the outlet malls by the interstate, and a summer draw for people floating the San Marcos River. Much of the searching is done on phones by people who are new in town or passing through: a student choosing a dentist, parents booking a room for move-in weekend, a family looking for tube rentals or lunch near the river. Restaurants, shops and clinics win those searches with their Google Business Profile, photos, hours and reviews at least as much as with their website.
Growth adds a second kind of buyer. A city gaining thousands of households creates steady searches for plumbers, roofers, HVAC, fencing and remodeling, and many of the companies chasing that work are young and still building their first reviews. We started from the same place with a Florida roofer: thin content, an incomplete Business Profile and few reviews. After a profile rebuild, citation cleanup and a review-request process, its qualified high-value leads rose 600% between March and September 2025 (Florida roofer case study).
San Marcos and the towns around it
San Marcos is the Hays County seat, and few service businesses here stop at the city limits. A plumber or HVAC company based in town usually works north to Kyle and Buda, west toward Wimberley, and south along the interstate to New Braunfels. Some take jobs as far as San Antonio or the suburbs we cover on our Austin and I-35 corridor page.
For the Business Profile, that usually means a service-area setup: hide the address if customers never come to you, and list the towns you really serve rather than every place within an hour. On the website, give San Marcos the main service pages and add a page for Kyle or New Braunfels only when you have real jobs, photos and reviews from there to put on it. A storefront on the courthouse square or near campus works the other way: keep the address visible and check that the map pin, hours and parking notes are right, since many first visits start in Google Maps.

San Marcos questions
What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?
It is the idea that a small share of your pages and keywords brings most of your results. For a San Marcos shop that might be the home page, one service page, the Google Business Profile and two or three phrases such as 'web design san marcos tx'. Find those few in your analytics and profile insights, make them as strong as they can be, and only then spread effort to the long tail of smaller searches.
Is SEO dead now with AI answers in Google?
No. Google did show an AI Overview for 'san marcos seo' in October 2026, but the organic results sat right under it, and the sources an overview cites are ordinary web pages. Pages that answer a question plainly and carry accurate local detail, like which Hays County towns you cover, are the ones those summaries tend to draw on. What has changed is that thin, generic pages get passed over more often.
Should a new San Marcos business build the website first or start SEO first?
Do both at once, so the work is paid for only one time. Plan the site around the searches it has to win: a page for each main service, your address or service area written out, titles that say San Marcos, TX rather than just San Marcos, and pages that load quickly on a phone. Monthly SEO can then start the week the site goes live instead of fixing a finished site later.
How much does SEO cost for a small business in San Marcos?
Our plans run from $65 a month (Basic, 5 keywords) to $575 a month (Titanium, 100 keywords), and the prices are the same anywhere in Texas. A single storefront or restaurant usually fits Basic or Silver at $125. A company covering several Hays County towns may need Golden at $235 for the extra keywords and research. Every plan is month to month and includes Business Profile, citation and review work.
